Scarborough to Whitby Rail -Trail

The 21mile railway line from Scarborough to Whitby was opened on 15th July 1885. After closing in the 19060s, the trackbed has since been used as a footpath & cycle path.

About Scarborough to Whitby Rail -Trail

Known as “The Cinder Track” due to its cinder track ballast, the line now forms 21 miles of Route 1 of the National Cycle Network and is very popular with cyclists and walkers from across the UK. The route should not be ridden on thin road bike tyres.

Operating along the Yorkshire Coast from 1885 until 1965, the old railway line is now a quiet off-road route for cyclists but where will it take you? You might decide to stop at one of the quiet bays such as Crook Ness, Cloughton Wyke or Stoupe Beck Sands… You may prefer to stop for a quiet pint or for a spot of afternoon tea before heading off to enjoy the sites and pleasures of Whitby, Scarborough or Robin Hood's Bay… You might stop to wonder at the 13 spans of the 120ft high Larpool viaduct where the line crosses the River Esk in Whitby or be gently confounded by the town that never quite was at Ravenscar…
