About Ripon Workhouse & Garden Museum
The Ripon Workhouse & Gardens in the centre of Ripon weave together the history of the notorious Victorian workhouse system and the natural beauty of its gardens.
Walk in the footsteps of the Victorian Poor
Explore the Ripon Workhouse Museum learning about the rich history of Victorian Britain. Uncover the stories of the 1800s, learning about the lives of those who lived in the workhouse and their experiences.
A unique historical experience
The Ripon Workhouse is one of the most complete workhouses in the UK. Visitors can see history come to life, meeting fascinating characters and uncovering stories of poverty, separation, and social inequality.
The workhouse journey begins in the original gatehouse building, with the Guardians' Room, inmates' bathing area, Vagrants' Cells, and Receiving Ward. See the contrast between the Master & Matron's quarters and the Victorian kitchen, scullery, dining room, and school room. Wander and relax in the restored heritage kitchen garden, where heritage crops are cultivated using methods once used by the inmates. Children can run in the orchard and meadow then explore the bug hotels. It's a great place to kick back and relax.
A carefully maintained Garden Museum
Inside the iconic Workhouse gates are colourful bulbs and borders of popular Victorian plants. Further along, the Master and Matron’s Garden offers a richly planted path, alive with rich colours and scents. These smaller colourful gardens not only provide a picturesque setting but also frame the surrounding Victorian buildings with cottage garden flowers.
The large Kitchen Garden is lovingly restored and very productive. It invites visitors to learn about the heritage fruit and vegetables, herbs, flowers and trees, offering a glimpse into Victorian society’s relationship with nature. Furthermore, as a heritage seed guardian, the Workhouse Garden takes pride in growing from seed and preserving heritage plants for future generations. This commitment to heritage is yet another interesting aspect for visitors.
The 21st Century Victorian Garden has been meticulously restored to its Victorian splendour. From the vantage point of the high terrace, visitors descend into the north-face sloping garden below. A path meanders around the edge and through the middle of the sloping garden with visitors leisurely exploring the four large central beds of heritage crops. Each collection is accompanied by detailed explanations and fun facts, catering to both seasoned gardeners and curious novices alike.
Meadow-like wildflowers and a vast spread of pear and apple trees are bordering the garden, whose fruits are harvested and pressed into juice. The garden's principles of biodiversity and sustainability have created a healthy, balanced environment that welcomes birds, bugs, and animals of all kinds. Logs and benches scattered the perimeter inviting visitors to relax and enjoy these serene surroundings whilst the picnic tables offer a space for the children to play and refuel.
Fun for all ages
With dressing up, hands-on activities, exhibitions, and collections, there is plenty to see and do for all ages. During school holidays, costumed volunteers lead interactive activities including baking and crafting.
