About Ripon Prison & Police Museum
Discover the darker side of Ripon’s past at the Prison & Police Museum, housed in the city’s former Liberty Prison and later police station.
Step through the gates into the prison yard, try the pillory and whipping post, then explore atmospheric galleries set inside the original whitewashed cells with their barred windows and heavy doors.
Downstairs, follow the story of policing in Yorkshire from Anglo-Saxon times to the development of the modern police service. See historic uniforms, insignia and equipment, and even climb aboard an original police motorcycle.
Upstairs, discover the harsh realities of Victorian crime and punishment. Experience the isolation of an empty cell, turn the crank and learn about punishments including transportation and birching. Budding detectives can also test their skills with a photo fit challenge and discover the science behind fingerprinting.
With hands-on activities, authentic surroundings and stories of real people, the Prison & Police Museum brings the history of law and order vividly to life. Visit alongside the Workhouse Museum & Garden and Courthouse Museum to follow Ripon’s wider story of poverty, justice and reform.
