About Knaresborough Windows

Knaresborough's "Town Windows" is a unique public art project that brings the town’s rich history to life through trompe l'oeil paintings. These paintings, which use the technique of creating realistic illusions, are installed on panels in place of the blind windows in the town's Georgian buildings. Many of these windows were blocked during the era of the window tax or designed to maintain the building’s symmetry.

The project, managed by Renaissance Knaresborough, invites visitors to explore the streets and discover these painted windows that depict characters and events from the town’s past. The artwork is visible year-round, offering a chance for locals and tourists alike to take in both the town’s historic architecture and the fascinating art installations. A guide is available to help you find all the "Town Windows" while you enjoy the town’s charming streets.
