About Kiplin Hall and Gardens
Grounded in North Yorkshire, making marks around the globe. Kiplin Hall has been home to four families over 400 years, each making their mark on the world while maintaining a love of the local land. Built in 1625 for George Calvert, the first Baron Baltimore. Calvert was secretary of State to King James I. After a career at court, Calvert and later his sons travelled creating the first colony in what is now Maryland, USA. Today, this and many other stories are told by Kiplin Hall Trust, the charity who run the attraction with the support of over 200 volunteers.
Home to history
In the 400 years it has stood Kiplin Hall has witnessed the rise and fall of large country estates, like many great houses it has come close to demolition. Thankfully it survived and now can tell its stories. Kiplin Hall was home to four families over 400 years, all related by blood or marriage. The contents of the museum include the art, furniture and possessions of the owner families. As well as a large collection of domestic kitchen and dairy ware, amassed by antiques dealer Annie Marchant. This helps to tell stories of the lives of those who worked at Kiplin in domestic service. Today the large team of volunteers who help to run Kiplin Hall are known as the ‘fifth family’.
Food yards not food miles
A productive walled garden provides fruit and vegetables to the new Café. Opened in 2025 the Visitor Centre features a modern café full of vintage charm, as well as a curated gift shop highlighting local artists and makers. The scent of freshly baked scones floats across the court yard each morning. Rhubarb and ginger scones are a seasonal sensation!
Explore on foot (undisturbed by your phone)
Beyond the walled garden ninety acres of grounds surround the picturesque Hall. Lakeside paths and woodland walks offer a tranquil escape from the everyday, and probably your mobile phone signal!
