Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast walk was devised by Alfred Wainwright and stretches 190 miles from St. Bees in West Cumbria on the shores of the Irish Sea to finish in North-East Yorkshire.

The Coast to Coast Walk is one of England’s most iconic long-distance trails, stretching nearly 200 miles from St Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. Devised by Alfred Wainwright, the route crosses three national parks—the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors—offering walkers a rich tapestry of landscapes.

The North Yorkshire section begins as the trail enters the Dales , winding through the limestone valleys and rolling hills of Swaledale. Highlights include the charming market town of Richmond, with its Norman castle and cobbled streets, and the peaceful farmland and riverside paths that lead eastward.

From Richmond, the route continues across the Vale of Mowbray—flat, fertile farmland that offers a change of pace—before rising into the North York Moors National Park. Here, walkers encounter dramatic heather moorland, ancient tracks, and sweeping views. Villages like Ingleby Cross and Osmotherley offer rest and refreshment before the final push to the coast and the end point at Robin Hood's Bay.

This stretch of the walk is known for its variety: from rugged uplands to quiet lanes, it showcases North Yorkshire’s natural beauty and rural charm. Whether you're tackling the full trail or joining for a few days, the Coast to Coast offers a memorable journey through the heart of the county.
