About Burn Gliding Club

The Gliding Club first started at Doncaster Aerodrome in 1960 as Doncaster Gliding Club, we moved to the ex-RAF Burn airfield in 1984, renaming the club name. Some of our club members started at Doncaster and have been flying for over 60 years. Membership is very affordable for young members and overall flying gliders works out much cheaper than powered flying. It is also one of the safest forms of flying.

We teach gliding to children as young as 12 up to adults in their 80s, so it's never too late to join. Plus you can go solo at 14 which some club members have done. The airfield is in an ideal position surrounded by flat safe land able fields and the A-frame runway layout allows us to launch and land into the prevailing winds. Over the years the club has benefitted from the good thermals and man-made thermals produced by the local power stations these are necessary for extended gliding.  We also encounter from wave thermal effect from the wind travelling over the Pennine's all year round. We have a fleet of training gliders comprising of two ASK21, one K13, an advanced trainer Janus, a single seater PW5 and Rowtax Falke motor glider. We carry out winch and aero tow launches using a Piper Pawneetug plane.

We currently fly on Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays only but this increase in the summer soaring season on an ad-hock basis. We also run weeklong flying courses during the summer months for all BGA flying members with different experience levels. We have featured on BBC Look North with reporter Charlotte Leeming visiting the club and having an aerobatic flight with our deputy chief flying instructor. We have a clubhouse for morning briefings , Training lectures, Club Simulator, social events and for after-flying drinks.
