About Nysa Industry Updates - the Power of Small: Embracing Inclusion in Practice - The West Park Hotel

RIBA CPD Topic - Inclusive environments

Session Overview
His talk aims to inspire small practice and sole practitioners to explore the potential of the work we do.
Grace will talk about the lessons learnt from 25+ years in practice, the importance of authenticity, demystifying what we do and embracing inclusion in practice. Why do we need to address inclusion, what that might look like in reality and what is the impact this can bring through our work?

About the Speaker
Grace graduated from the Mackintosh School of Architecture, where she was awarded the Charlie Cochrane Silver Medal and the RIAS Silver Medal/Portfolio Prize for Scotland. She later worked for several renowned UK practices, with completed museum work and social housing design being highly acclaimed, before leaving traditional practice. Challenged by the social, ethical, and economic imbalances around her while raising a young family, she founded Grace Choi Architecture in the North East of England in 2013. The values-led, design-oriented small flexi-practice now focuses on the transformation of local communities and homes.
Alongside practice, Grace has advocated for professional progression through roles such as past RIBA North East Co-Chair, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Group Lead, and advisor to the RIBAJ editorial panel. She has been influential in demystifying issues of inclusion within the architectural community, notably by founding the J.E.D.I. Talks. She is a regular visiting reviewer at UK schools of architecture, as well as a speaker, mentor, writer and trustee/advisor to both local and national boards/ committees. She co-edited Inclusion Emergency: Diversity in Architecture, published by RIBA Publishing in June 2024.
