About Sarah Smout: If Glaciers Were Gods - Skipton Town Hall
Inspired by her recent expedition in Svalbard, Sarah invites you deep into the Arctic with her iconic blend of looped cello and vocals, alongside carefully collected field recordings of ice and melting glaciers; her boldest and most thought-provoking show yet.
Sarah Smout is a cellist, singer, and poet whose work is inspired by the living world. Interweaving live-looped cello, ethereal vocals, and poetic storytelling, she creates immersive performances that explore our relationships with nature in the face of the climate crisis. Her recent expeditionary residency in the Arctic will inspire her debut album due in 2027, alongside cross-discipline collaborations with Arctic charities and nature conservation work. Her Arctic improvisation film premiered at theUNESCO World Day for Glaciers conference in Paris to an international audience of scientists, policy makers and artists.
Sarahs music has featured on BBC Radio 2, Introducing, and Look North, and shes worked with Greenpeace, COP26, and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. She has captivated audiences across the UK with shows at Hay Festival, Kendal Mountain Festival, Folk East, Shambala, Deershed Festival and a theatre tour for the Royal Geographical Society. A seasoned collaborator, shes played with Michael Chapman, Bridget St. John, The Magpies, The Mediaeval Baebes and many more.
From icy fjords to mossy peat bogs, Sarahs art invites audiences to listen more deeplyto land, to water, and to the fragile beauty of our shared home.
