About We See You: Remarkable Ordinary Women - St Mary's Church

We See You: Remarkable Ordinary Women is an hour long collection of emotive audio works, songs, compositions and field recordings, making visible the lives of ‘invisible’ ordinary women and the legacy that they left behind.

‘We See You’ is about the legacy of ordinary women and their quiet, remarkable contributions. It explores 180 years of female emancipation in the UK, from 1846 onwards, across society and different walks of life, from literary giant Anne Brontë, unassuming gardeners and second-hand shop owners to pilots in WW2 and the gently increasing number of female astronauts.

The installation is in audio format: songs, instrumental music, soundscapes and spoken word. It is installed in St Mary’s Church, Scarborough, beneath spectacular uplit gothic arches. There will be printed text to enhance the experience and to enable hearing impaired audience members to fully access the lyrics. It is suitable for older children upwards.

Music and sounds are written, recorded and produced by Scarborough composer/songwriter Sarah Dew with recorded contributions from field recordists and guest singers, including the members of Scarborough band Raven.
