About When God Spoke English: William Tyndale's Struggle for the First English Bible - St Mary's Church

This year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first printed English New Testament. We can easily take for granted that Bibles exist all around us, widely, cheaply, and in languages that we can read. Indeed, today the Bible is the worlds most published book, existing in millions of copies. Bibles are all around us, from prized personal copies to old family Bible passed down through generations, the well-thumbed copies laid on desks, all the way to copies of New Testaments we find tucked in hotel drawers! This was not always the case.

The story of the printed English Bible begins with one man: William Tyndale. Tyndale risked his life to translate the Bible into English, fuelled by his desire to see the humble ploughboy know the Bible as well as the Pope.

Join us as Dr Harry Spillane traces the dramatic twists and turns of Tyndales exile, escapes from the authorities, smuggling of New Testaments, and eventual death and martyrdom. Five hundred years on, discover the enduring legacy of Tyndales words on the English-speaking world.

You can book your ticket here or you can pay on the door.

This event is part of the Scarborough 400 celebrations.
