Tan Hill Inn

Britain’s highest pub sitting at 1,732 feet on the moors north of Swaledale. This historic hostelry is a traditional North Country pub with stone floors and real fires and has been offering food, drink and accommodation to travellers for centuries.

About Tan Hill Inn

The Tan Hill Inn is Britain's highest pub and is situated amid stunning moorland scenery on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Its remote situation and striking features have earned it a prize place in Britain’s pub culture, making it a bucket list destination for visitors and a regular star of TV programmes and commercials.

Pennine Way walkers and cyclists, day-tripping motorists and followers of ‘van life’ all beat a path to sample its traditional hospitality.

The menu offers a range of British pub classics such as pies and Yorkshire Puddings, as well as burgers and other American-style favourites. There are grill offerings of steaks and ribs as well as a menu for children and smaller appetites. The well-stocked bar offers a range of lagers, craft beers, spirits and ales, including the inn’s own branded drinks.

Tan Hill is open for breakfast from 8.30am and serves brunch from 10.30am. Lunches start at noon and dinner goes through to 8.30pm. It seldom closes before 11.30pm during the week and serves to midnight at weekends and bank holidays.

There is a popular acoustic open-mic night in the bar every Thursday from 8.30pm and regular music gigs in the events space, The Barn, at weekends. The Barn is also available for weddings and conferences. Attached and nestled in the rocks behind the inn is also a 12-seat VIP room; ideal for parties and business meetings.

There are nine en-suite bedrooms, a walkers’ bunk room and two glamping pods. Wild camping is allowed as well as camper van parking, following a £10 registration at the bar, giving access to shared shower and toilet facilities. The fee mostly goes to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Tan Hill Inn is truly unique, standing in splendid isolation which also means it is completely off-grid. Apart from some solar power and its own well everything, including fuel for the generator, has to be brought ‘up the hill’.
