Mapping the History of Scarborough: A proposal from the UK Historic Towns Trust

Big Ideas By The Sea is delighted to host this event in collaboration with the The UK Historic Towns Trust here in Scarborough.The Historic Towns Trust (HTT) make historical maps and atlases of towns and cities. The HTT have been mapping towns and cities throughout England, Scotland and Wales since 1963. HTT have now published seven atlases (comprehensive studies) and twenty OS-style maps, showing the history of our towns and cities from pre-Roman times to WW2 in one beautifully designed map resource. The maps show existing and now-vanished heritage sites, significant architectural structures, archaeological finds and now-invisible geographical features, to piece together the narratives of our local history. This year is a big year for the trust, and will add a further four publications to the organisations library, with Chester, Ipswich, St Andrews and Bradford, all set for completion.This event will look at how Scarborough can be included in this programme.The event will be chaired by John Oxley and there will be talks by Professor Emerita Sarah Rees Jones (University of York) and Martin Wills (Historic Towns Trust).Prof. Sarah Rees Jones Sarah Rees Jones is Professor Emerita of Medieval History at the University of York. She works on medieval social history, is the author of York, the Making of a City, 1068-1350 (Oxford, 2013) and contributed to the British Historic Towns Atlas, Volume V, the City of York (2015).Martin Wills Martin has worked within the heritage sector since 2011 and is the current Development Manager at the Historic Towns Trust. Prior to this he has worked as Partnerships Team Leader at Historic England and as a project manager for the Science and Museum Group. Before this he has held curatorial roles at the Ripon Museums Trust, Royal Armouries and Craven Museum Gallery, after starting his heritage career in Indonesia working with UNESCO.Refreshments will be available at St Mary's.
