About Crimea History in Your Hands Event

10th June is the anniversary of the action for which John Lyons won his Victoria Cross. His citation states:On 10 June 1855 at Sebastopol, in the Crimean Peninsula, Private Lyons picked up a live shell which had fallen among the guard of the trenches, and threw it over the parapet, thus saving many lives. To mark the occasion, we are hosting an all-day event focussing on the Crimean War: the role of the 19th Regiment (forerunner of the Green Howards) played; the account of Margaret Kirwan who accompanied the regiment, one of the first-hand accounts by a woman of a ‘hot’ war, she found herself so near the action her skirt was nicked by stray bullets, and John Lyons in particular. The day will include a private tour of the collection, a glimpse into the museum stores, a handling session of contemporary material from the conflict and, to end the day, the chance for guests to hold and examine the Lyons Victoria Cross medal group. For Further information or any queries please contact the museum.
