About Back to the Futurist? An Exhibition

Back to the Futurist? is an exhibition about the now-demolished Futurist Theatre in South Bay, Scarborough. The exhibition showcases the photography of Paul Wilson and John Oxley, and a short film by Emily Richardson. The Futurist was a fixture on Foreshore Road. It was built to the design of Scarborough architect Frank A. Tugwell and opened on 27 June 1921 as a cine-variety theatre. The Beatles played there twice, and many other national and international stars appeared on its stage. As a cinema, it was one of the largest theatres in the country, seating up to 2,393! The theatre closed on 6 January 2014 and was completed demolished by August 2018.Pop-in and share your memories of this lost Scarborough landmark. The Exhibition will be at the Shakespeare Gallery, St Helens Square, Scarborough, open between 2pm to 4pm each day from Saturday 17th May to Saturday 31st May. If we have sufficient volunteers we will extend the opening hours each day! Watch this space.
