About Ruth Abokoku: A Rehearsed Reading - Scarborough Library

A rehearsed reading of "Ruth Abokoku", a Nigerian experimental play written and directed by Kenneth Uphopho, inspired by the final moments of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. The play takes place in Ruth's prison cell, where she awaits her execution, having refused the offer of letters written by people to plead for her mercy.

The play's structure is non-linear, fragmented, and poetic, reflecting Ruth's disjointed thoughts and emotions as she confronts her mortality. The narrative is interspersed with flashbacks, dreams, and hallucinations, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
