Whitby is a popular seaside destination on the Yorkshire Coast. It’s rich history, breathtaking views and vibrant seaside charm make it a must-visit spot in North Yorkshire.

Where is Whitby?

Whitby is located along the Yorkshire Coast, close to the North York Moors in North Yorkshire. The seaside town is located   approx. 19.8 miles from Scarborough and 31 miles from Middlesborough.

What to Expect

Whitby is a popular coastal town placed around a harbour split by East and West Cliffs. Sat upon East Cliff is the gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey which you can see overlooking the town and the cobbled streets below. Seaside attractions line the harbour and along the beach. The working harbour remains a hub for maritime activity with fishing and pleasure boats coming and going.

Where can I get information in Whitby?

Whitby has a tourist information centre located on Langbourne Road (opposite the co-op). The tourist information centre is a manned information point ran by Visit North Yorkshire. You can find leaflets, books, gifts and information about Whitby and the surrounding areas in North Yorkshire.

When is market day in Whitby?

The Whitby Outdoor Market market day in Whitby are Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Where are public toilets in Whitby?

There are public toilets in Whitby which are managed by Whitby Town Council. These are located New Quay Road, Pier Road, West Cliff, the Abbey Headland and in the Market Place. It is 50p to use the toilets.

Getting there:

By Rail: Whitby train station is mainly served by Northern Rail with services to Middlesborough, Sunderland and Newcastle. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway also runs steam engines to Whitby train station from Pickering stopping at Grosmont, Goathland, Newtondale and Levisham.

By Bus: Buses run  frequently from Scarborough, Middlesborough, York and Malton.

By Car: If you are travelling by car to Whitby, there is a Whitby Park & Ride Service which is located North of Whitby and runs from Easter to the end of November. The A171 runs through Whitby which is the main road from Scarborough. If you are travelling from York, you can take the A64 before turning off on the A169 at Malton.

Whitby has several car parks central to the town including the Marina Front and Back Car Parks. Abbey Headland car park sits next to Whitby Abbey with 431 car parking spaces and 10 coach spaces. Although, it’s worth noting the location may include having to navigate down from the cliff headland via various paths or the 199 steps.
