Winter Walks in North Yorkshire
Looking for a gentle stroll to stretch your legs? Or are you after a harder hike with challenging terrain? Maybe you want to explore a little off the beaten track?
Whatever kind of walk you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered. Now is the perfect time to grab your big coat, wrap up warm and pull on your walking boots to enjoy the last of the sunshine before winter really kicks in.
Across Hambleton there are rural, town and village trails, family walks, national trails and accessible walks for all. You can explore the North York Moors National Park, amble through the Howardian Hills and visit Bedale as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. You’ll be spoilt for choice whichever direction you go in.
On a slightly more ambitious level or if you’re looking for a challenge, Coast to Coast footpath cuts through the area as does the Cleveland Way National Trail. Perfect for a longer stretch. And if you want an Instagram worth view, take a hike to the iconic landmark of Roseberry Topping.
The predominantly flat and low-lying area around the Selby district is appealing to walkers, particularly families who have little legs to consider. You can happily explore the tracks, loops and longer walks on offer, many with history and heritage to learn about while you’re walking. There’s the Drax Millennium Walk, Selby Horseshoe, Cawood’s Wolsey Walk and the historic Towton Battlefield Trail. There are town trails and waymarked walks at Skipwith Common and walks along the canals that snake their way around this district.
Or you can explore the Yorkshire coast’s dramatic coastline, packed with beaches, cosy cafes and bustling seaside towns and villages. There are hikes and trails a plenty to take in the beautiful views of the Yorkshire coast at a pace and distance to suit you. Head inland a little to explore the beautiful vast and varied landscapes just a few miles in. There’s a rugged beauty to this area that just begs to be explored on two feet.
Offering both town and country walks, the Harrogate area has an enduring popularity among walks which is well deserved. There are the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales to conquer, treks across Nidderdale, historic locations such as Fountains Abbey near Ripon or Hackfall Woods at Masham and gentler strolls across the plains of the Vale of York. Whichever type you choose there really is a terrain and walk for everyone here.
