Forest of Bowland National Landscape

The Forest of Bowland National Landscape straddles the border of North Yorkshire and Lancashire and is a rich and rugged landscape filled with nature and adventure.

This dramatic and exciting landscape is a patchwork of grassy fells, windswept moorland and rich forest that can be found just south of the western Yorkshire Dales.  Just a short journey by rail from Skipton, the Forest Bowland is a haven for outdoors lovers.

​For Walking

For walkers, the hills offer incredible challenges and magnificent views.  The hills and valleys host a complex network of footpaths, bridleways and byways which will reward those who enjoy planning intricate routes with their trusty Ordnance Survey map.  From the top of the peaks, several of which are over 500 metres, you will be rewarded with incredible views over the surrounding hills.

​For cycling

Cyclists have long known the delights of the Forest of Bowland, with the serious and undulating landscape providing a range of challenges to road cyclists, such as Sir Bradley Wiggins who used the area for training rides.
With winding climbs around every corner, this is a fantastic area to find your new favourite roads.

Mountain bikes can explore the mix of byways and bridleways which trace the immense feels and valleys. For something a little more extreme, visit the purpose-built trails at Guisburn Forest for a mix of technical and physical challenges.

For Nature

The forests and moorlands across the Forest of Bowland National Landscape are home to many endangered and iconic species of birds and animals.  With several habitats of special scientific interest keep your eyes peeled for Ring Ouzel, Hen Harriers, Merlin and Stonechat in the skies and trees.  Lower down Brown Hare, rare moths and many different species of bumblebees will brighten up your day as you explore the area.
